Beyond Aesthetics
Exploritory Design Series

Fall 2024
Beyond Aesthetics is an exploratory, pre-thesis ideation project that reflects on the design work I’ve created over the past three years and marks a deliberate shift in direction. While much of my past work has been rooted in personal experience, this project challenged me to adopt a more objective lens—focusing on audience interaction, usability, and the functional role of design. I aimed to create work that calls on other designers to let function and research inspire form, a principle I deeply believe in. To challenge my usual experimental style, I also explored a more minimal, intentional design approach.

The deliverables included:

  • A manual for a pod-based coffee machine that examines not only its physical function but also its broader societal implications—from daily rituals to global consumption habits
  • A tear-off poster with prompts encouraging designers to reflect on the purpose and impact of their work
  • A sticker checklist designed as a quick tool for self-evaluation during the design process
  • A notebook-style booklet for jotting down ideas, thoughts, and critiques
  • A video tutorial demonstrating how to use a pod-based coffee machine, reinforcing the manual’s functional intent

Together, these deliverables emphasize the idea that design should serve, inform, and engage. Not just look good.
